Beer and how much a beer costs

Posted in Dominican Republic

This is very important information to all of us that like and drink beer.

How much does a beer cost is one of the most common questions we get asked.

It costs about US 1.50 for a cold small one (33cl or 12oz).

Beer Pricing Table:

The prices presented below are for cold beer bought in a Colmado or Colmadón (Dominican for Bodega) which is the local corner store (prices may vary slightly depending on the zone).

Brand Size oz Size in cl Cost in Pesos Cost in USD
Presidente Small 12 33 50 1.43
Presidente Large 19 56 75 2.14
Presidente Jumbo 33 100 100 2.86
Bohemia Small 12 33 45 1.29
Bohemia Large 19 56 65 1.86
Bohemia Jumbo 33 100 90 2.57
Brahma Small 12 33 45 1.29
Brahma Large 19 56 65 1.86

Beeronomics:

You know that beeronomics or beeronomix is a very interesting phenomena, if you know the cost of a beer you can pretty much relate that to the general cost of other things in a country. You can use this method to understand the prices and rates when you travel, here is an example:
If a beer cost fifty pesos or one dollar (unit or euro) in a working man's colmado, bar or bodega, and if a breakfast costs 150 pesos or 3 dollars or 3 units, a newspaper should be around 25 pesos. You can apply that and understand how things are priced in that country. You can actually use beer as a comparative tool as if it was hard currency.

The most popular beer in the Dominican Republic is Presidente. Bohemia beer, from the same brewery, is gaining a lot of popularity.
